This morning we had Jeff Stockton speak to us about how to tell our story while presenting it.  He talked about story telling vitamins and that we need to practice our story every day.  Please see below for Hreem and Owen's storytelling.

This afternoon we continued to work on our Mars Inquiry.  Students were required to pick only 10 items they would want to take to Mars if they had the opportunity.  Please see below for some pictures.

After the inquiry class students were involved in a knowledge building circle.  Please see below for their answers on what they believe they should bring to Mars:

This morning students participated in coding, french, handwriting, and art.  Coding this morning was unplugged (meaning without computers).  Students learned how to express dance moves using simple sequencing instructions.  First a number of students watched the video below and then they were required to explain the dance steps to students that did not watch the video.

Please watch Hreem explain the dance moves to Emma.

This is a video of the second dance move.  https://vimeo.com/28612585

Please watch Cruz explain the dance moves to Elora.

Please watch the below video of Makenna explaining to Marcus the dance moves.

Later on in the morning a number of students started to type their picture prompt story into kidblog.  If you have an opportunity please read and respond to your child's story.

NASA Thanksgiving Thursday

This morning we continued working on our picture prompts.  Once students finished their writing they were encouraged to edit their own work.  After that students were required to read their story to a peer, and listen to their story, and then feedback was given to the stories.  The final process included students self assessing themselves against a rubric.  Please ask your child about their story.

Later in the morning students went to music and gym class.  In gym students played floor hockey and pillow polo, please ask your child about this game.

In math class this afternoon students, after a session of mental math, learned a new math game called Race to 1000/10,000.  Please ask your child about this game.  Also, the below pictures are of the students playing the game.

This afternoon we continued working on our inquiry into Mars.  As a class we watched a NASA video wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving from the Space Station.  As well we talked about the process of bringing personal items to Mars.  Please ask your child about this.

During Daily 5 students started to write about one of the pictures below; a dinosaur, a panda bear, a cat, and a giant trying to squeeze into an elevator (or the elevator is really tiny).  Students were encouraged to write about the setting, characters, problem, three attempts to solve the problem, and a conclusion.

This afternoon the students were all able to get onto Mathletics for math class.  We also attended an assembly of an author/illustrator who wrote the book The Adventures of Rabbit and Bear Paws.  Please see below for pictures.

During inquiry students, worked in groups communicating and collaborating, 20 different cards determining if the item should be placed into the need, right, or want column.  Please see below for some pictures.

HOMEWORK:

This morning we took an exciting ride on the bus to the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.  We were required to attend the later show as it took an extra long time on the bus.  Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take pictures of the actual show, but please see below for some pictures leading up to the event.

This afternoon we continued on with our Fairy Tale lesson.  As a class we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff  and then the students created a story map of this book.  Students have been asked to start thinking of a setting and characters for their Fractured Fairy Tale in which they will be creating.

Mars Monday

This morning we continued working on Daily 5.  During Daily 5 students were required to "check for understanding" while reading their book.  If possible this is one strategy that you and your child can work with.  Please see below for how you can help your child with this strategy at home:

  • When reading to your child, stop periodically and say, “Let’s see if we remember what I just read. Think about who the story was about and what happened.” Do this 3 or 4 times throughout the story.
  • When reading to your child, stop and have them practice checking for understanding by saying, “I heard you say...”
  • Ask your child the following questions:
    • Who did you just read about?
    • What just happened?
    • Was your brain talking to you while you read?
    • Do you understand what was read?
    • What do you do if you don’t remember?

  • This afternoon I worked with my whole class during math.  As a class we talked about analyzing parts and wholes.  Students were required to answer their word problem into three sections, "Think, Solve, and Answer".  Please ask your child about these three sections.

During inquiry students worked on their Mars research and continued adding information to their web.  Please see below for a video and a picture.

    Notes
    1) There is a field trip tomorrow.  Please make sure your child has a snack that can fit in their pocket as they will not be bringing their lunch bag.
    2) Scholastic book orders are due Monday next week.
    3) Please fill out the Families Helping Families spreadsheet, as there are a lot of items missing and I would hate for our family to go without.

This morning Jeff Stockton came into our class and finished the story about Chinooks.  Please ask your child how chinooks come about.  Also, below are some pictures during this presentation.  Students were asked to create a bullseye rubic, as well without speaking, form groups of four.  During this time groups were required to create the letter O and X, as well a toaster and a car without speaking.

We continued to read our read aloud book Wonder.  We have finished the second section of this book and we will start the third section on Monday.

For homework I would like the students to answer the following questions on kidblog:
    1) What did Via convince Auggie to do? and Why?
    2) Why do you think Auggie decided to go back to school?

This afternoon we continued with our inquiry into Mars.  Students used books, magazines, Internet, etc. to research facts about Mars.  There are a number of websites and videos on our class website.  If students would like to continue with their research over the weekend they can use the resource page from our classroom website.  With the research students created a web with a number of facts about Mars.  Watch Anukula explain a fun fact about Mars.

Please see the video below that the students made of "Random Acts of Kindness".  Also, you can check out our class twitter account at @learners82 which will show this video as well.

    FAMILIES HELPING FAMILIES

This morning we continued with our Fairy Tale inquiry.  As a class we read The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall. We completed a visual storyboard, which included the setting, characters, the problem, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd steps in the problem and conclusion.

In the afternoon we continued on with our fairy tale inquiry and created a venn diagram comparing The Three Little Pigs with The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs.

During math class student used their communicating and collaborating skills to figure out a logic problem.  Students were very excited and engaged with this process.  Please see below for a video of a group of students communicating their final results.

This afternoon we continued working on our class "Random Acts of Kindness" movie.  Students are having a great time working on the movie.  We are hoping that it will be finished by tomorrow.  Please see below for some pictures of the process.
